Dental sealants are materials, usually plastic, used mainly in children’s teeth as soon as the adult molars come through.  Also known as pit and fissure sealants this dental treatment is intended to prevent tooth decay.  Dental Sealants are painted on the teeth and dental offices and are simple and painless.  While sealants have been around since the 1960s, many people still don’t know about sealants.  In fact, fewer than 25% of children in the United States have seen once on their teeth.

Dental Sealants Pros And Cons

Dental sealants are a valuable asset to helping prevent cavities; however, it doesn’t take the place of good dental hygiene and regular checkups.  Dental sealants can last up to 10 years unless there’s a steady diet of crunchy foods which can cause chipping and cracking up the sealant.

Dental Sealants For Adults

Adults could benefit from dental sealants even if they’d never had sealants applied.  Maintaining a good dental sealant plan for teenagers and adults is worth the investment.  All adults can benefit from sealants because it has been proved that 95% of all people will eventually have cavities in the pits and or groups of their teeth.

Dental Sealants Dangers

Dental sealants dangers are another example of not being able to avoid all risks and only determining which are worth the risk.  In our opinion, dental sealants represent less risk than the alternative of cavities and treatment.  But we want to inform you of the controversy.  You may have heard of the buzzword “BPA” in recent years.  Bisphenol A, commonly referred to as BPA, is a resin used in many types of plastic.  BPA is known to be an endocrine disruptor used in bottles and as liners in food cans.  While it is not conclusive, there is some evidence that BPA can be harmful to a child’s health.  We wouldn’t knowingly use dental sealants that contain BPA, but many of them contain compounds that turn into BPA when they come in contact with saliva.  The ADA fully supports continued research into the safety of BPA; but, based on current evidence, the ADA does not believe there is a basis for health concerns relative to BPA exposure from any dental material.

Dental Sealants Safety

Professionals claim that BPA exposure is subtle and can be reduced even further by regular dental hygiene especially when first applied.

My husband and I love Verde Pointe and Dr. Kirk. We have been patients for about 5 years, and it has been the best dental experience we have ever had. Everyone is always very nice and helpful. The entire visit turns into a relaxing experience. Roxanne French
