How Clear Aligners Have Improved the Orthodontic Treatment Process

wearing clear dental aligner

Discreet

Traditional care from an orthodontist involves the use of metal braces and wires. Although this solution is effective, many individuals avoid it because they don't like the idea of wearing noticeable metal appliances for months or even years. Many patients prefer clear aligners, which fit directly over the teeth and are very discreet.

Removable

Braces also make certain foods off-limits and make it difficult to clean your teeth. Clear aligners overcome these obstacles because they are removable. The aligners should be removed when eating and drinking to prevent damage. In addition, they can be removed when cleaning your teeth, so you can easily brush and floss all surfaces.

Comfortable

The aligner trays are made of a smooth plastic material that is less likely to irritate the soft tissues of your mouth, an issue that is common with metal brackets and wires. While patients may still experience some mild discomfort when becoming used to aligner trays, many patients greatly prefer clear aligners.

What to Expect The Treatment Timeline

Clear aligners can be a quicker straightening solution than traditional metal braces.

Consultation

During your consultation, we will assess the alignment of your teeth and bite, and discuss any concerns that you have about your smile. We will determine if clear aligners can effectively achieve your goals or if an alternative procedure is better suited to your needs.

Planning and Fabrication

Next, we will work with lab technicians to design and fabricate aligners that will fit comfortably on your teeth and gradually move them into their proper positions. After about four to eight weeks, you can expect to receive your aligners.

Starting the Process

You will come to our Marietta office to try on your first aligner. Patients should wear their aligners for 20 to 22 hours each day to complete the process on time, removing them only to eat, drink, brush, or floss.

Check-ups and Aligner Progression

Depending on your custom plan, you will switch out your aligner trays every one to two weeks. With each pair of trays, your teeth will shift slightly, bringing them into alignment over the course of treatment. Most patients begin to notice an improvement in the appearance of their smile two to three months after this orthodontics process starts.

Completing the Process

The alignment of the teeth and bite will continue to improve until treatment is complete. On average, the timeline with orthodontic clear aligners is 12 months, but the exact timeline will be determined during the planning and fabrication phase. To complete treatment as quickly as possible, individuals should wear their aligners for the recommended amount of time and follow all aligner care and cleaning instructions.

What Dental Conditions Can Clear Aligners Treat?

crooked teeth

Crooked Teeth

Crooked teeth can result in an overcrowded appearance and asymmetry. They also make flossing difficult. Clear aligners can correct this issue along the upper and lower arches.

bite issues

Bite Issues

Bite issues such as overbite, underbite, crossbite, and open bite can affect the appearance, function, and health of your smile. Some bite alignment issues can be improved with clear aligners.

dental gaps

Gaps

Some of us have a space between the two front teeth or spaces between many teeth. We can design your treatment plan to close the gaps and achieve a more balanced smile.

Overlapping Teeth

Overlapping Teeth

Overlapping teeth can be difficult to clean, and they are also an aesthetic concern for our patients. We can use clear aligners to resolve these issues for improved health and appearance.

A Twisted or Turned Tooth

A Twisted or Turned Tooth

Some people have a single twisted or turned tooth that contributes to a crooked and overcrowded look. Clear aligners can slowly turn the tooth to its proper position for a straighter appearance.

Restore Previous Orthodontic Results

The results of previous treatment by an orthodontist (which can include traditional braces, clear braces, or other types of orthodontics) can regress without proper maintenance, such as retainer use. Clear aligners can restore tooth alignment for patients who have undergone previous care with an orthodontist.

A Straighter Smile Is One Phone Call Away

Crooked teeth can cause an aesthetically displeasing smile, but they can also cause major oral health issues and lead to a temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD). Luckily, you don't need to see an orthodontist for minor to moderate misalignment issues. The dentists at Verde Pointe Dental Associates can fit you with a customized set of clear aligners to get your teeth back in line and your smile beaming.

How to Adjust to Treatment

Compared to the treatment typically offered by orthodontists, most people adjust to clear aligners with no issues. By following these tips and care instructions from our practice, most people complete treatment comfortably and on schedule:

  • Consider switching to new trays just before going to bed. This allows you to sleep through the mild initial discomfort when it's time to start wearing new trays.
  • Use over-the-counter pain medication, such as ibuprofen, to reduce discomfort.
  • Drink ice water to ease discomfort the first day or two after switching trays.
  • Wear the trays for at least 20 hours a day.

How to Care for Your Aligners

Your dentist will give you a set of instructions on how to care for your aligners. Below are a few best practices to ensure your teeth and gums remain healthy during treatment.

Maintain Good Oral Hygiene

Brushing your teeth twice daily and flossing once daily will help prevent cavities, tooth decay, and gum disease. Keeping your teeth and gums healthy during your straightening treatment is key to its effectiveness and getting you the smile you want.

Brush After Eating

You should brush your teeth after every meal before you reinsert your aligners. Without cleaning, leftover food remains pressed against your teeth throughout the day. This can lead to cavities and, depending on the food, it can stain your aligners and make them visible to you and others.

Avoid Drinking Sugary and Acidic Drinks

Try to avoid high-sugar drinks like soda and high-acid drinks like coffee during your treatment. If you do have one of these beverages, thoroughly brush your teeth before reinserting your aligners so the sugars and acids do not erode your enamel. Never drink these beverages while your aligners are in your mouth.

Clean Your Aligners

Clean your trays twice a day. Denture cleaner is a great tool for keeping your aligners looking new. Try to avoid brushing your aligners, but if you do, use a soft-bristled toothbrush and cool water to brush all surfaces of the trays as some bristles can scratch your aligners and some types of toothpaste can cause them to become cloudy. Both result in aligners that are no longer clear, which can make the wearer feel self-conscious.

Use Lukewarm Water

Always use lukewarm water when cleaning your aligners. Since they are made of plastic, extreme hot and cold temperatures can warp your aligners. Misshaped aligners are no longer effective and could veer your treatment off course. If your aligners become lost or damaged, contact our office immediately so we can recommend the next steps.

Keep Your Aligners Safe

One of the benefits of clear aligners over traditional braces is they are removable. However, this can lead to them being lost or damaged. Whenever you remove your aligners be sure to keep them in a safe place where they cannot be moved, dropped, damaged, stolen, or taken by a pet.

The Cost of Treatment

The most common question we hear from our patients about this safe and effective treatment is, "How much does treatment cost?"

We offer clear aligner treatment for $1,500 to $2,500. Many insurance plans now contribute to the cost of this orthodontic treatment. In addition, we accept CareCredit® financing, which offers no-interest and low-interest payment plans based on your credit score. Our staff would be glad to help you understand your coverage allowance and financing options so you can choose the best way to budget for this solution.
